The links on this page will take you to the pictures.   Almost all of them have been contributed by members and others, and we appreciate these fine contributions.  Yours are welcome, too.  To have something posted, e-mail it to the webmaster as a .jpg file and we’ll take it from there.  Other formats work, too; .jpg just seems to be the most common.

One of our most prolific contributors is Mark Llanuza.  Mark is a well known Chicago area rail photographer who, unlike many others, made a point of photographing not just trains and equipment but railroad employees as well.  Attesting to the quality of Mark’s work is the fact that the North Western, Union Pacific & Metra have all requested his assistance from time to time in photographing special events.

Other generous contributors include Illinois Division Engineer Dave Hawley, Louis Wilson and Wally Smith, a retired Wisconsin Division engineer.  Unfortunately, Wally and his wife died in a tragic automobile accident in August 2004.  Many of the people is his photographs remain unidentified.  If you see someone you know or recognize the event at which the picture was taken – please let us know and we will add the information.  Again, e-mail the webmaster.

What more appropriate photo is there to start this off with than “The 400.”  This is a 1941 company photo taken as No. 401 was passing under Bridge B, a few feet west of Clinton Street Tower.  I guess we could title this picture “All Gone!  The covered wagons, the streamlined consist, the signal bridge, the semaphores, Clinton Street Tower and even the wooden ties; they’re all gone!

Afternoon Train to Carroll Ave.

One of the more unique Chicago area operations was the Navy Pier Line.  Originally extending out to Navy Pier, the line by 1999 had been cut back

to the Sun-Times Building, its last customer.  Let's follow the UP 1730 with Engineer Jeff Lilja and Conductor Danny Barden as the train makes

its way over a vintage drawbridge, under huge downtown buildings and down Carroll Avenue's street tracks.  Clicking on the link below will take you

to the pictures.  To return to the cnwvets web site, just press your browser’s “back” button.  Our thanks to Jim Hansen for making us aware of this site.
