Little is known about the first Officers of the Veterans’
Association, but E.T. Erickson is one exception. Erickson was elected Vice President at the
founding meeting of the Veterans’ Association on
Erickson was born near
Christianssund, Norway on July 30, 1861 and came to the United States with his
parents in July 1867, settling on a farm near Calamus, Iowa. He was first employed by the Chicago &
North Western Railway during the winters of 1877, 1878 and 1879 under Foreman
Mike Waters to shovel engine sand in cars from the gravel pit near the Wapsie
River, west of Calamus, Iowa,. Later, he
worked as a section laborer under Foreman Waters at Wheatland in 1881 and the
early part of 1882. He again worked as a
section laborer under Foreman Reynolds at
He began studying telegraphy with
Agent W.L. Marshall, of Gilbert, in November 1886, working on the section
during the day and studying telegraphy and station work in the evenings. His first employment as a night telegrapher
