Deadwood, Black Hills & Western Update

07/29/10 - Several years ago, we posted some information about the proposed Dakota, Black Hills and Western, a rail line that was planned to be built on former right-of-way from Whitewood to Deadwood, SD.  Our former roundhouse in Chadron had been leased for $1,000 per month and the plans were to make Chadron the maintenance headquarters for the DBH&W.  This impressed us at the time as an ambitious project and there were doubts that it could ever be put together.

Rick Mills, well known rail historian from the Dakotas, brings us up to date:

“Unfortunately, the DBH&W project is dead due to lawsuits from adjacent property owners. The Chadron roundhouse, yard, and trackage out to Dakota Junction were sold to the new Nebraska Northwestern Railroad (NNW) earlier this year.   NNW is in the process of re-opening the roundhouse for contract work/rebuilding of off-lease MOW equipment, locomotives, and possibly rolling stock. Their former DM&IR SD-9 gleams in its red and white paint reminiscent of the last days of the M&StL.”

Thanks, Rick.  The original story is located at the bottom of the Recent Railroad News page.
