On Sunday, July 17, 2011, the annual C&NW Veterans picnic was held by the Kenosha/Waukegan Chapter of the association. It was held in the back yard at the home of Dan and Yvonne Sylvester in Waukegan.  The weather was a little on the warm side but anyone that felt the need was welcome to avail themselves of the air conditioning inside.  The picnic was held under a twenty foot square canopy that kept us in the shade.  There was also bottled water, pop and beer to assist in the cooling.  We had 28 people registered to attend and 23 attendees.  Of the attendees 13 were members and 10 were guests.  (Five members from the Kenosha Waukegan Chapter.)

We started at noon with a social period that went until 1:30 or so.  The dinner bell was rung and we all sat down to enjoy a fine pot luck meal.  The main course was pulled pork provided by the chapter.  After eating we held a short and informal business meeting. I had admitted the error of my ways that necessitated the canceling of last year’s picnic and promised to straighten up and fly right.  As punishment I was required to remain as president for another term along with Yvonne as secretary treasurer and Dick Moseler as VP.  We decided to continue having the picnic in our back yard and next year’s will be on Sunday, July the 15th.  We talked about the declining attendance but because the treasury is in good shape decided to continue having the money raffle until it is used up and then go to a 50-50 type raffle.  Frank Matello then made a motion to adjourn and we held the raffle.  Dick Moseler made another one of those fine “400” step stools that was won by Curt and Barb Schmidt.  The $100 bill in the money raffle went to Frank Matello.  There were several other items that were donated and several that we had carried over from past years.  The raffle ended around 3:30 and we began another social period.  It was around 5:30 before all had left. It was a great party and we are looking forward to next year.

We began with $696.52 in our treasury, took in $196.00 in reservations, $41.00 in donations and $187.00 on the raffle for a total of $424.00.  Expenses for the food, drinks, supplies, raffle and mailing of the invitations came to $340.87.  Prior to the picnic we expected to lose money, what a surprise to find we made $83.13.  That brings the chapter’s balance to $779.65.  Thanks to all for their support, we are the smallest of the chapters and could not continue without you.
