117 members and guests attended the annual luncheon and reunion of the Chicago Chapter of the Veterans’ Association of the Chicago and North Western Railway held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Elks Lodge 1526 in Des Plaines, Illinois. At 1:00 PM, Chapter President Dave Svendsen asked for a moment of silence for departed members and said a blessing on the meal. The spread laid out by the Elks was excellent and there was plenty of it.

The business meeting was dispensed with, it being explained that once elected to office there is no way out except to resign! There being no resignations, the present officers will remain - David Svendsen, President; Mary Flynn, Vice President and Bob Guhr, Secretary-Treasurer.

Members and guests each received a piece of C&NW history from over 70 years ago, a 1940 a vest pocket memo book. These were discovered by a lady on the North Shore who arranges estate sales. She contacted us and asked if we’d be interested. We were; she had about 120 of them, which was enough for everyone. Inside, a small map gave mute testimony to the extent of the North Western in the early 1940’s with service to dozens and dozens of towns that no longer have rail service.

The meeting wound up with the drawing for the door and raffle prizes. Sincere thanks to everyone who brought donations and especially to Bob Lindenmuth who donated well over a dozen items. We really appreciate these contributions, which helped make the event a success.
